Palm Cove Wheelchair Access
If you are mobility impaired but you would like to join in on all the fun on the beach with your family and friends then you can now have easy access to the beautiful beaches of Palm Cove and Port Douglas with Queensland’s only all-terrain wheelchairs.
There are two beach friendly wheelchairs available – one on Cairns most beautiful beach, Palm Cove and one in Port Douglas on Four Mile Beach.
This is a great breakthrough for those with a disability or limited mobility. It gives everyone equal opportunity to see and enjoy the Cairns beaches in comfort.
Not many swimmers or beach goers who are mobility impaired visited Palm Cove or Port Douglas in the past due to the sandy beach being so difficult to access in a regular wheelchair.
Since the addition of the wheelchairs to the beaches tourists who may have difficulty walking or other problems such as spina bifida are now able to get right onto that sandy beach that they could once only look at and admire from a pathway.
Palm Cove Beach Friendly Wheelchair
The wheelchair is kept in a storage hut at the back of the Palm Cove Surf Life Saving Club on Williams Esplanade. An accessible roll out matting allows the wheelchair to access to the beach and hard sand along the waterfront.
The beach wheelchair is also controlled by the Palm Cove Surf Life Savers and can be reserved directly on the beach in front of the surf life saving club with the life saver on duty between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
To reserve the beach wheelchair you will need to call a few days in advance and have your own carer in assistance and also sign a waiver for the use of the wheelchair on the beach contact: Palm Cove Surf Club (07) 4059 1244 or Surf Life Saving North Queensland (07) 4049 1200 between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
