MV-SOF Private Charter Liveaboard Scuba Diving Adventure
Private Charter Liveaboard Scuba Diving Adventure MVSOF
Scuba diving the remote regions of the Ribbon Reefs and Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea requires you to join a live-aboard scuba diving tour purely because of the remoteness and the need to travel with experienced mariners of the region. As a keen scuba diver you would have definitely heard about the massive Potato Cod family of fish that you can hand feed at the famous Cod Hole and the thrilling experience of scuba diving with hundreds of sharks at North Horn on Osprey Reef. If you could plan your private charter one or two years on advance we would urge you to book your charter in the northern winter months of July to September as you have a high chance of encountering the inquisitive Dwarf Minke Whale on the outer Ribbon Reefs along with giant Humpback Whales as they migrate to the region to calf and find a mate. This luxurious live-aboard scuba diving tour departs from Cairns Marina on a Monday and a Thursday dependent on your length of travel on the 3, 4 or 7 day scuba diving adventure.
Australia’s Great Barrier Reef
Stretching more than 2300 km along the coast of Queensland, the Great Barrier Reef is visible from outer space according to American astronaut Buzz Auldren. This World Heritage protected reef is a complex ecosystem of around 2900 individual reefs that stretches from Bundaberg in the southern part of Queensland and goes all the way to the top and past Cape York up to Papua New Guinea. In the remote northern sector 10 string shaped coral reefs, collectively called ‘The Ribbon Reefs’, provide some of the most stunning tropical reef scuba diving in the world. This region is one of those must visit, must do’s on many a scuba divers places to visit in their lifetime.
Hundreds of kilometers beyond the walls of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef the Coral Sea hides the remnants of ancient mountainous volcanoes where dinosaurs once roamed. It is here, the experienced scuba diver is presented with sheer walls laced with massive soft corals and gorgonian fans that plummet 1000 meters to the ocean floor. These isolated reefs, including Osprey and Bougainville Reefs are the permanent home territory for the huge schools of pelagic fish, giant manta rays and various varieties of sharks. These waters are also renowned for their crystal clear visibility enabling the scuba dive to see all of the beauty that surrounds.
The Cod Hole – 3 day Private Charter Scuba Dive Adventure
This liveaboard scuba diving tour departs every Monday from Cairns, and takes guests to the iconic outer Barrier Reef Ribbon Reefs and then onto the world famous Cod Hole. Over the two and half days of travelling you will have the opportunity for up to 11 deep water scuba dives and see a huge variety of colourful hard and soft corals, giant clams, anemones, huge schools of cruising pelagic fish, and of course the famous family of giant potato cod that live here permanently. The luxury vessel will travel at night whilst you are sleeping comfortably in your cabin so you can wake up to a new destination the next day. Your last night is spent on board MVSOF' in the bay at Lizard Island. Here you can spend some time exploring the Lizard Island the place where the worlds rich and famous go to relax, fish dive and snorkel in luxury. Spend the morning here traversing some of the walking trails and see if you can spot the famous lizards that inhabit the island giving it its name, before boarding your flight to Cairns. The one-hour, low-level scenic flight back will arrive in Cairns around 11:30am on Thursday where you are transferred by coach back to your Cairns accommodation.
The scuba diving sites on the Great Barrier Ribbon Reefs include Steve's Bommie, Challenger Bay, The Clam Gardens, Pixie Pinnacle, Lighthouse Bommie, Temple of Doom, The Snake Pit, and Dynamite Pass. Just at the pinnacle of the Ribbon Reefs is the world famous Cod Hole and home to a cheeky family of resident Potato Cod (Grouper). These magnificent fish are easily approachable as they are now used to seeing scuba divers as friends and not foe. During the months of June and July the Lighthouse Bommie becomes the safe home for the cheeky Dwarf MinkeWhale who also likes to interact with the scuba divers.
Some of the best scuba diving locations on these reefs are generally at a depth of less than 20 metres, often with the most abundant marine life being found in the top 5 to 10 meters of water which is great for those guests that are only snorkelers and not divers. This is a good location for snorkelers also as the relatively sheltered waters have very little current and it also opens up the opportunity for newly certified divers to really try out their new skills in such an amazing location.
Coral Sea/Osprey Reef – 4 day Private Charter Scuba Diving Expedition
This is one of our most popular scuba diving expeditions as the 4 days covers a lot of ground and locations giving the on board guests that wow factor that they have had the opportunity to see the best of the best over the four days and did not waste one minute. This scuba expedition begins on a Thursday morning at 8.30am with guests boarding a scenic flight from Cairns which hugs the coastline and then flies over the reef to Lizard Island, to meet MVSOF. Once you are settled into the ships cabins you will soon be diving the very top section of the Ribbon Reefs as your introductory to the magic below. Whilst you are sleeping your boat will be motoring out to Osprey Reef 220 kilometers out in the Coral Sea. Here you will spend two days scuba diving the spectacular walls of Osprey Reef which is an ancient volcanic atoll. Osprey Reef is the destination for the most talked about experience of swimming with the sharks and its exceptional visibility. 'North Horn' at the tip of Osprey is a site where grey reef sharks, silvertips, and the occasional oceanic congregate literally in their hundreds. Your very last scuba day adventure is spent at Ribbon Reef Number 3, or occasionally if the weather decides to be kind on the Bougainville Reef, which is south of Osprey Reef. Quiet calm travel overnight whilst you are sleeping returns you to Cairns early on the Monday morning.
Beyond the continental shelf that harbours the Great Barrier Reef, lie the isolated reef systems and crystal clear waters of Australia's Coral Sea. The region covers over 1 million square kilometres - three times the size of the neighbouring Great Barrier Reef - and is scattered with spectacular coral reefs, in an undersea world of ancient mountains, rising thousands of metres from the ocean floor.
In this oceanic wilderness, where man's influence is relatively insignificant, pelagic fish populations abound including grey whalers and white tip reef sharks, hammerheads, tuna, barracuda, big eye trevally, mackerel and manta rays. Rare sea creatures such as the Nautilus and Lacey Scorpion fish inhabit these waters, alongside an incredibly diverse range of corals, including massive soft corals and gorgonian fans far from land, with the sea floor far below, the Coral Sea is also known for its blue clear waters and underwater visibility, which ranges between 30 and 100 metres. 150 km off the north east coast of Queensland lays Osprey Reef, one of the most famous of the Coral Sea reefs. Here you will find the sheer walls, incredible visibility and schools of pelagics typical of the Coral Sea reefs. But Osprey Reef offers more. At the tip of this 25 km long reef is 'North Horn', renowned for its thriving shark population. At this site you can dive year round with legions of grey whalers and white tips plus the occasional silvertip, while in the winter and spring schools of hammerheads can often be seen in the blue. Manta Rays are commonly sighted at 'Around the Bend', a dive site with a manta ray cleaning
