River Drift Snorkel Tour
Our first immersive activity for the morning is the half day Mossman River drift snorkel tour where we suit up in warm wetsuits, don our masks and snorkel gear and optional flotation devices and enter the gin clear waters to begin our search for fresh water creatures of all sorts.
In the Mossman River it is said that there are around 33 species of freshwater fish, the elusive and shy Australian platypus, fresh water turtles, eels and water dragons.
If you are not interested in the snorkelling part you may just request the flotation device so you may lay back and look up at the rainforest canopy as the current has you drifting gently downstream.
This is a nice calm and relaxed way to see the varieties of butterflies and birds that make the rainforest such a beautiful peaceful place to be.
Did you know that “Rainforest Bathing” is a big thing in Japan? It makes you think about the Japanese swimming in the rainforest but it is actually just spending time in the ambience and serenity of the rainforest to basically detox form the noisy city life.
Lunch Time
We make our way to the Daintree Tea House to enjoy a nicely prepared luncheon and a taste of the local exotic fruits and locally grown Daintree tea.
The speciality here is the freshly caught Barramundi, a very famous fish of Tropical North Queensland that has a very light flavour and soft white flesh. Very tasty indeed.
The Daintree Tea House has wonderful tropical gardens that attract butterflies, birds, lizards and other rainforest animals.
Accommodation
After a well earned lunch it is time to check into our rainforest accommodation at Ferntree Rainforest Lodge and aquaint ourselves with the region.
An environmentally friendly resort set back in the heart of a lush coastal rainforest, a short stroll from Cape Tribulation’s Myall Beach and its famous mangrove boardwalks.
Whet Restaurant for dinner tonight! Whet combines the natural wonder of the surrounding jungle with its unique and casual atmosphere.
Located right in the heart of Cape Tribulation, and aptly named to “whet your appetite”, the delicious range of cuisine on offer at Whet Restaurant is sure to make your visit to the Daintree memorable
Our guests have the option of sitting back and enjoying the ambience of the lodge and turning in early or joining a night walk through the Daintree Rainforest to see the activity of the Nocturnal and Crepuscular residents going about their foraging business at dusk.
Day 2
- Ocean safari half day reef experience
- Lunch at Turtle rock cafe
- Cape Tribulation beach
- Jindalba boardwalk
- Private sunset river cruise
Ocean Safari
We begin our day with a half day marine wildlife day on the Great Barrier Reef on an ocean safari snorkel tour visiting 2 different coral reef sites just off the Daintree Coast at Cape Tribulation.
Here our reef guides will show us the more popular places to snorkel with sea turtles, eagle rays, giant clams, star fish and all the brightly coloured tropical reef fish.
This region of the Great Barrier Reef is not visited by many and the water clarity here is just perfect with limited industrial or farming run off from the coastal lands so the reef system is very healthy.
Turtle Rock Café
After our Great Barrier Reef snorkel tour we head off for lunch at Turtle Rock Café located in the remote rainforest region of Cape Tribulation just 400 metres from the beach.
They offer a healthy menu of sandwiches, burgers, cakes, muffins and meals to order.
Cape Tribulation
This famous valley resembles a giant amphitheatre, with a semicircle of hills dominated by Mt Sorrow (850m) and Mt Hemmant (1000m).
The south eastern rain, trapped by this valley, results in a tropical climate with high temperatures, humidity and rainfall. Renowned for its scenic landscape, remote beaches and Where the Rainforest meets the Reef!
Jindalba Boardwalk
Next up it’s time to explore on foot, our favourite walk is the Jindalba boardwalk, shady and lush, the boardwalk meanders around and across a small creek, far beneath a towering canopy of palms and ferns.
The boardwalk is elevated at all times, and there are a variety of interesting flora and fauna to experience.
There are also opportunities to witness the most famous local fauna of the region, the Cassowary.
The Cassowary is a large, flightless bird most closely related to the emu.
Although the emu is taller, the Cassowary is the heaviest bird in Australia and the second heaviest in the world after its cousin, the ostrich and it is because of them and their great gardening techniques that we have this wonderful rainforest we see here today.
Our walk lengths and difficulties can be modified to suit your wishes.
Private Charter Sunset River Cruise
Heading South to finish our day with a memorable Daintree River Wildlife Cruise.
A 2 hour exclusive afternoon to sunset cruise where the surroundings are full of opportunities to observe and photograph some of the most primitive forms of animal and plant life in the world.
Most days we are lucky enough to experience great bird life and crocodile activity. A real highlight for our customers
