Daintree Rainforest, Mossman Gorge | Aboriginal Cultural Tour | THT8/THT8N
The dreamtime weaves its presence through every leaf and rock in the Daintree Rainforest.
Our bespoke Daintree Rainforest tour will open your groups minds to another time and culture as they explore the visually beautiful Mossman Gorge.
They will learn how the trees and plants provided food, medicine and hunting tools for the local Kuku Yulanji Aboriginal tribespeople.
Why book this tour?
- Travel in comfort with trained, professional guides.
- Daintree Rainforest Tours include GPS-activated, multi-language commentary available in German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Chinese.
Your drive from Cairns will snake along the Captain Cook Highway coastal road, a World Heritage site with stunning views of the pristine empty beaches and offshore tropical islands.
Many car adverts have been filmed on this iconic stretch of road.
This tour then heads north to give you a fantastic day of beautiful World Heritage rainforests and more wildlife than you can point a camera at.
On this great value day tour we will stop at the following places:
Mossman Gorge Tour – Aboriginal/Indigenous Dreamtime Tour
You can choose to include the Ngadiku Dreamtime Walk (in depth indigenous experience) to your day.
Your Aboriginal/Indigenous Kuku Yalanji guide will lead you into the land of his forefathers and take you on a journey of discovery like nothing you have heard about before.
A mystical journey into how for 50,000 years the Aboriginals survived and flourished in the rainforest and the importance of this land for the KuKu Yalanji local tribe’s people.
When your tour guide starts to light what looks like a cigar, don’t worry, he is lighting local rainforest herbs for a smoking ceremony that will start your tour as the tendrils of smoke waft through the forest to ward of any evil and to cleanse the air.
Be amazed as you learn what leaves from the trees can be mushed up to make bush soaps and learn how to get ‘inked’ with ochre painting from the earth.
Learn how the Aboriginal people harnessed the properties of the plants of the rainforest for their medicine, food and for hunting.
You will walk under luxuriant foliage with vines trailing like a set from an old Tarzan movie.
Stand under ancient fern leaves spreading like giant green umbrellas above you.
The sheer density of leaves and branches as the vegetation and skyscrapers of trees clamour to reach the light and the precious water contained in the cloud rainforest canopy is awe inspiring.
This tumbling foliage fills an amazing 1,200 sq. km and is the largest rainforest on the Australian continent.
For the nature lovers the Daintree Rainforest contains scientifically acclaimed examples of flora and fauna and is home to rare and unique pre-historic wildlife found only in this particular area.
From 6 foot tall prehistoric Cassowary birds to kangaroos that live in trees.
The native Australian animal diversity will astound your groups.
David Attenborough has claimed that his favourite part of the world was up here in the rainforest and the reefs of Tropical Far North Queensland Australia.
The Daintree Rainforest contains 3% of the reptile, frog and marsupial species in Australia, and 90% of Australia's butterfly and bat species.
7% of the bird species and 12,000 species of insects in the country can be found in this area.
All of this diversity is contained in an area that takes up 0.1% of the landmass of Australia.
If you are a bird watcher, ornithologist, twitcher or just ‘bird mad’, this is indeed a haven for getting out the binoculars and zoom camera lenses.
It’s not uncommon to cross the path of one of the remaining 1200 Cassowaries that wander around the Daintree Rainforest floor. Their diet of forest fruits and seeds propagates new growth as they sow the forest floor with seed infused faeces which is vital for the rainforest’s growth.
If you are a herpetologist or a reptile lover you might see a bolting Boyd’s Rainforest Dragon as it speeds for cover running on its back legs like an athlete hurtling towards a finish line.
At the end of your 1.5 hour walk enjoy traditional bush tea and damper and a chance to chat with your guide and ask questions.
Lunch will be at the Mossman Gorge Centre before you join a Kubirri Warra clan member for a 2 hour coast and cultural walk
2 Hour Coast and Cultural Walk - Cooya Beach
