We now travel through the lush, ancient Daintree Rainforest before having a break at Cape Tribulation where the rainforest meets the reef!
So now we’ll put the vehicle into 4WD & tackle the iconic Bloomfield Track. We’ll take on creek crossings, forested hill climbs and descents before we cross the Bloomfield River.
We’ll also enjoy a leg stretch at the Bloomfield River, the home of the famous Bloomfield River Cod, and take the time to breathe in the freshness of our beautiful rainforest surroundings.
We make our way into the outback Queensland pioneering town of Cooktown and head to the Grassy Hill Lookout which provides a wonderful view of Cooktown, the Endeavour River & the Coral Sea. We stop by at the Captian James Cook monument on the Cooktown waterfront to take in the amazing history of the region.
Ok, it’s our shout, we’re buying you lunch at the historic Cooktown Hotel, better known these days as The Top Pub.
We’ll then head to Australia’s best regional museum, The James Cook Museum before enjoying the waterfront esplanade on the Endeavour River which was named by Captain Cook himself after the successful repair of his ship which enabled him to continue on with his world voyage.
Heading home, we’ll go back the inland outback route stopping along the way at the mysterious Black Mountains and the historic Palmer River Goldfields.
All in all, a wonderful day full of wonderful memories that you can now tick off your bucket list!
The Daintree River: Continuing North & having enjoyed the stunning views of the Coral Sea, we cross this mighty Tropical Far North Queensland river via a vehicle ferry, many people regard this as a highlight in that you’ll get to see first hand the size and beauty of this awesome river.
Daintree Rainforest / Cape Tribulation: Having crossed the Daintree River, our journey now takes us through the ancient Daintree Rainforest, lush, green & stunning, before we enjoy a leg stretch and coffee at Cape Tribulation. Often referred to “where the rainforest meets the reef”.
Captain James Cook Monument: This is an historically significant site as it commemorates Cook’s landing site on the Endeavour River. Cooktown is the only place in Australia, aside from Botany Bay, where Cook’s crew came ashore for any length of time.
The Bloomfield Track: The iconic 4WD Bloomfield Track is regarded by many as one of the “must do” 4WD journeys & accordingly is on many people’s bucket list. You’ll get to enjoy it in our air conditioned, purpose built 4WD coach!
Lions Den Hotel: enjoy a cold drink at this historical pub established since 1875.
Grassy Hill Lookout: Arriving in Cooktown, you can’t help but be taken by the stunning beauty of this charming settlement. We’ll head straight to Grassy Hill Lookout where we’ll enjoy an amazing panorama of Cooktown, the Endeavour River & also the Coral Sea.
The Top Pub: It’s lunchtime & we’re paying, we’re off to another original North Queensland Hotel, The Cooktown Hotel, better known these as The Top Pub; choose grilled Barramundi or Rump Steak with salad & chips and a beer or glass of wine.
James Cook Museum: Australia’s best regional museum.
Black Mountains: Having left Cooktown, on our return journey via the inland, outback route we’ll stop at the mysterious Black Mountains. Formed as a result of an enormous volcanic explosion some 200m years ago, it is quite extraordinary, Having said that, legends & stories abound, you decide!
Palmer River Goldfields: It dosen’t take a great deal of imagination to understand the harsh realities faced by the early pioneers and miners back in the day. A stunning landscape contrast to the coastal rainforests we travelled through earlier. We’ll stop for a number of classic photo opportunities.
