Cairns Highlands- Atherton Tablelands Ancient Rainforest Tours
Our Wilderness Eco Safaris owner/operator guide ‘Kevin’ will collect you from your Cairns doorstep at around 8:00am and Northern Beaches at 7.30am in ‘Betsy’ #2 a specially modified 4WD Land Cruiser.
After introductions all round we then head towards the high rainforest covered mountain ranges 2400ft above sea level.
With access to the most unique rainforest locations in the Cairns Atherton Tablelands leave civilisation behind and become immersed in an ancient land where plants and trees date back over 300 million years old.
Our four wheel drive tour heads southwest of Cairns up the Gillies Hwy an original track used by the local aboriginal tribe is surrounded by eucalyptus and conifer forests offering breathtaking views over the valleys.
Witness the surrounding forests suddenly change into Tropical Rainforest as the canopy closes in and dims the light; you have now reached the Atherton Tablelands.
Lake Barrine Wildlife Spotting - 10:00am
Welcome to Lake Barrine a 1000 year old volcanic Crater Lake home to ancient year old Twin Kauri Pines. Enjoy morning tea and some wildlife spotting at this picturesque lake before heading on to see the giant Cathedral Curtain Fig Tree.
The Cathedral Fig (10:45am), an impressive example of a strangler fig is on an easy accessible rainforest boardwalk, immerse yourself the sounds, smells and sights of the rainforest as your experienced guide explains about the endangered and dangerous plant life and keeps an eye out for a variety of fauna residing here.
Extinct Volcanic Crater and wildlife spotting at Lake Euramoo - 11:15am
A stop and interpretive walk around Lake Euramoo which is an exstinct volcanic crater that is ideal for spotting Boyd’s Rainforest Dragons and the Musky Rat Kangaroo both endemic to this area.
It’s now time for lunch; dine alfresco on a delicious Ploughman’s lunch on the banks of a crystal clear mountain stream in amongst lush rainforest.
Continuing on the adventure a change of scenery is apparent; rainforests omit to eucalyptus and conifer forests then to Australian bush as you venture down the Great Dividing Range.
The Australian bush is home to Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Rock Wallabies and Pretty –Faced Wallabies and you’ll view impressive two to three meter termite mounds across this rugged landscape.
Lake Tinaroo - Dirt tracks amongst the Rainforest - 12:00pm
Hit the dirt tracks surrounded by dense rainforest around the spectacular Lake Tinaroo. A man-made lake; Lake Tinaroo’s forests are home to a variety of birdlife like the Bush Turkey, Orange Footed Scrub Fowl and the in the lake itself resides elusive Barramundi.
Mareeba ‘s hand made ice-cream
Stop in Mareeba for a hand-made ice cream and choose from 50 locally grown flavours including avocado, lillypillys, macadamia nuts, mangoes and coffee!
Valley Of The Ferns and a swim in a natural rock pool - 4:30pm
It’s time to make tracks for Cairns but this is no boring four wheel ride home, travel through the Valley of the Ferns with stops at the Clohesy Fig once again accessing heritage listed rainforest areas that require permits and are off limits to most.
Expect exciting river and creek crossings back into rainforest and a welcomed cool down swim in a natural rock pool, complete with its own spa bath and jungle swing.
Here you are immersed in the oldest of ferns in the world. They are also the largest fern on the globe so take the time to enjoy your surrounds and take pictures of these ancient wonders,the Giant King Fern.
Lake Morris Dam - 4:45pm
As you navigate over the range keep an eye out for iconic Cassowary, the rainforest eventually opens up where you’ll look upon the awe-inspiring Lake Morris and dam which is Cairns’ water supply and an ideal photo opportunity.
Travelling back down to Cairns; lit up with the afternoon sun it’s a lovely welcome back to civilisation after a day of exciting wilderness adventures.
Morning Tea – enjoy a selection of cakes and biscuits with a tea or coffee
Lunch – feast on a ploughman’s lunch, coleslaw, potato salad, fresh leaf salad, three cold meats and a tropical fruit platter. Soft drinks and bottled water are included.
Afternoon Tea – locally grown fruits made into delicious ice cream, a range of 50 flavours to choose from.
There are toilet breaks available every two hours.
