You’ll even have a chance to see what noise you can make on your Didgeridoo.
Explore the depths of the World Heritage rainforest on land and on water in your historic World War II amphibious army duck tour vehicle.
You’ll be touring with your interpretive tour guide as you travel under flora and fauna that’s been there for over 150 million years.
As you tour down the river you might see turtles, fish, pythons and lizards.

You will have so much fun learning about the local wildlife and the Indigenous culture, that’s adults and children alike – a great day for the whole family.
Your Kuranda coach tour vehicle will pick you up from your Cairns accommodation at around 8:30am (a more precise time will be confirmed at time of booking).
If you live outside the Cairns pick-up area then you can self-drive to Freshwater Train Station to be picked up by the tour bus from there.
Your tour bus will take you up a windingly beautiful road draped with rainforest foliage in this World Heritage Area as you ascend the escarpment to the top of the Tablelands at an elevation of 330m (1,083ft) to the Rainforestation Nature Park, Kuranda.
Rainforestation Koala and Wildlife Park
You won’t be able to resist the animals at the Koala and Wildlife Park - well... maybe the snakes and the crocs aren’t so cuddly but you won't resist a photo with a Cuddly Koala!.
You will be taken on a half hour guided tour as your tour guide will introduce you to the native Australian animal residents.
You will walk along elevated boardwalks so you will have uninterrupted views of Wombats, Dingos, Quoll’s, Crocodiles, and the very rare 1.8m high (6ft) high Cassowary birds.
You will even have a chance to have a photo taken as you stand beside a cuddly koala or a crocodile (don’t worry it will have its jaw is taped close) – optional extra payable on the day.
If you like the non-furry kind, there are snakes (non-venomous), frogs and lizards. Your ranger tour guide will give information on the animals you are seeing and their individual characteristics and quirks.
Meet the King of the Wildlife Park,“Jack the Ripper”, a 5m (17 ft) saltwater crocodile that is aptly named as he allegedly has killed his past 12 girlfriends.
You and your children will enjoy getting up close to the kangaroos and wallabies as you can hand feed them as they wander about freely.
Pamagirri Aboriginal Cultural Experience
This is a fascinating 30 minute cultural tour where you will gain a greater understanding of the Indigenous Pamagirri tribe that are the local Aboriginal tribe of the area.
Your Pamagirri Aboriginal tour guide will talk about their culture and how they have survived in the rainforest for the last 50,000 years (well before Bear Grylls!).
You will walk along an all-weather walk-way that is based on the Rainbow Serpent, an important symbol of the Aboriginal culture.
You will see how Aboriginal tools were made and learn how the plants and trees were used for food and for hunting.

Your Aboriginal tour guide will give demonstrations on how to throw a boomerang and a spear with a Woomera. You will then have your own chance to give it a try.
A Rainforestation tour guide actually holds the world record for spear throwing at an amazing 147.75 m (484 ft).
See if you can throw your spear near this amazing distance and if your boomerang will come back to you. Don’t’ worry, there are nets erected so that if it doesn’t, you won’t have too far to walk to recover it.
Pamagirri Rainforest Walkabout
Take the guided "Pamagirri Rainforest Walkabout Walk" through the Rainforest with a Pamagirri Aboriginal guide. The Pamagirri Rainforest Walkabout Walk is an extra cost and is payable direct to Rainforestation Nature Park on the day of your visit - make sure you let Rainforestation know when you arrive you would like to take the Pamagirri Rainforest Walkabout Walk.
The Pamagirri Rainforest Walkabout Walk is at 1:00pm and goes for 30 minutes
Rainforestation Amphibious Army Duck Tour
This is a unique tour and the only one like it in Australia, where you can get deep into the Rainforest on land and on water in the one vehicle. This amazing tour takes 45 mins – 1 hour and your tour vehicle will be a historic World War II amphibious vehicle called an Army Duck.
Your Duck tour holds 30 people and underneath it has the strange combination of 6 wheels, a propeller and a rudder.
You’ll be taken into the depths of the jungle where your route will be framed by fronds of ancient palms and trunks of the trees reaching up to the rainforest canopy.
Your tour guide will take you past hanging vines, strangling figs and trees that sting (don’t worry they know where they are).
It’s quite amazing that even though this World Heritage area only takes up 0.1% of Australia it has such wonderful animal diversity.
With 90% of the butterfly and bat species, 3% of the reptile, frog and lizard species, 7% of the bird species and over 12,000 species of insects.
At the edge of the riverbank the propeller will be activated and you will be taken out smoothly in the water to explore the river.
You will cruise along the river and its banks as you see fish, eels and maybe even the odd turtle, water dragons or a lazy sunbathing python.

World Heritage Kuranda – “The Village in the Rainforest”
- Australian Butterfly Sanctuary
This is the largest butterfly flight aviary in Australia. Located next to the heart of Kuranda and the Kuranda markets it’s an easy walk away if you wish to visit here after lunch.
It houses an amazing 1500 tropical butterflies, many of which are found locally in this part of the world.
Since 60% of all butterfly species in Australia are found in this small area, this is really a butterfly paradise.
Wander round under this large enclosure and make sure you are wearing white, pink or red clothing so you can attract the butterflies to your clothes.
Watch out for the large blue iridescent flashing wings of the Ulysses Butterflies, the unofficial emblem of Tropical Far North Queensland and the fluro green local Cairns Birdwing.
- Whilst in Kuranda Optional Extras You May Like To Do On Your Own
Depending how long you spend in the Butterfly Sanctuary you could visit one of the other attractions in Kuranda Village.
- Bird World
With this World Heritage Area containing an amazing 7% of the bird species, 45 of these can be found in Australia at Bird World.
All birds are housed under an enormous landscaped aviary and you can view them flying and living in their natural habitat as the enclosure is beautifully landscaped with waterfalls, lakes and ponds.
One rare bird you’ll get to see is the prehistoric Cassowary that stands at 1.8m (6ft) and is one of only 1200 left. These birds play a vitally important part in distributing seeds to maintain the balance of tree species in the rainforest.
- Riverboat Cruise
This is only a 45 minute river cruise. It’s not long but it is filled with amazing sights of nature as you glide down the Barron River under the towering trees of the rainforest.
On the banks you can see the wildlife maybe a basking crocodile, resting turtles, a Darter Bird with its outspread wings drying and even water dragons.
- Cuddle A Koala In Kuranda Village
Whilst in the Kuranda Village visit the Koala Gardens and book your photo cuddling a Koala
- Kuranda Village Markets
The markets in Kuranda at the “Village in the Rainforest” are world famous. When the first visitors came to Kuranda over a century ago to view the Barron Falls, many artisans and artists also made Kuranda their home at this time.
Over the years they sold their unique and beautiful items in Kuranda’s markets and their reputation was established.
It started off with the original market and due to demand has now expanded to a second market at the Heritage Markets.
Today, it’s a great place to wander around to look for unique and interesting souvenirs and items, from clothes to hats, from candles to jugs.
Sip a coffee made with local coffee beans or drink a fresh coconut juice fresh from local palm trees.
This is an action packed tour day with many beautiful sights of rainforest, wildlife, butterflies, cultural interactions and just so much stimulation for eyes and brain, it will make learning fun – and that’s for children and adults alike!
You might even have learnt how to throw a boomerang correctly!
The Kuranda tour coach will collect all guests from the Butterfly Sanctuary at 3:00pm. You will be back at your holiday accommodation by 4:30pm approximately.
