Low Isles is a small coral cay made up of two islands one called Woody Island which is full of Mangroves and sea grass beds and the other a coral island known as Low Isles. Together they provide shelter for mooring and the perfect habitat for sea turtles of which you see on a regular basis in these waters as you snorkel around. You will see them either sleeping on the ocean floor or on coral bommies or swimming right up beside you as though you do not even exist.
Low Isles has an old lighthouse and a mini museum that you can explore as you take a wander around this lovely little tropical island. There is a lot of maritime history, Aboriginal cultural history and the ongoing weather and marine research that is carried out here still today by marine scientists from the world over is shared with other researchers world-wide.
Between 1926 – 1929 Low Isles was the site of the first detailed scientific study of a coral reef anywhere in the world and still today this base line data is used in modern research to study the change in reef systems growth and decline.
Low Isles is a very popular destination for day boats so you will be sharing it with others but of course its another wonderful snorkel tour option.
Only 1 commercial tourism boat goes to Snapper Island daily (with a permit, permit cost included in price) so it’s a very private location. At times you may see some sea kayakers making their way around the island and its beaches also.
Snapper Islands beaches are very beautiful and private so it’s a great way to get away from other people and big crowds of tourists
Snapper Island is located just off Cape Kimberley near the mouth of the Daintree River and it rises 99 metres above sea level and is home to low level rainforest vegetation which supports some migratory seabirds.
It is also part of the Kuku Yulanji peoples country and they still hunt in the waters around this island at various times of the year.
In years gone by this island was used as a processing station for beche-de-mer or as we Australians call them Sea Cucumber which is a Chinese delicacy. The harvesting of Sea Cucumbers is now banned on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
Today you may still possibly see the remnants of stone work from what is thought to be a Chinese garden as you wander around this little island.
The island got its name because some folks think it looks like the head of a crocodile on the water’s surface thus Snapper Island it became.
Morning tea, afternoon tea and lunch are provided including gourmet sandwiches, tropical fruits and chocolate bars
For the homeward journey back to Port Douglas you will enjoy an assorted cheese platter with fresh fruits
Should you wish to bring along any alcoholic drinks, soft drinks and any other beverages that is permitted but you may only consume the alcoholic ones after all of the in-water activities have finished for the day (for safety reasons). Water is available all day long.
