Mossman Gorge Tour - Daintree River Cruise

Leaving from Port Douglas this one day rainforest tour that will truly be a delight, educate and give you a new perspective on the fragility of our natural environment. Walk under leaves of ferns that resemble a roof of umbrellas, look up tree trunks as far as you can to see the filigreed leaves on the outstretched branches of the rainforest canopy. Welcome to the oldest tropical lowland rainforest on earth!

Your day tour with only a maximum of 8 guests will have you immersed totally in the sounds and smells of this magical place. You can almost feel the tangible energy of every tendril and stem fighting for light, water and survival in this ancient rainforest. Try not to swing on the hanging vines to do your Tarzan impersonation you may just grab a waitawhile branch and then you will be sorry! The tumbling foliage of Daintree Rainforest fills 1,200 sq. km and is the largest rainforest area on the Australian continent.

When you visit the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation you will have to get used to just hearing the noise of chirping insects and bird calls with the odd rustle of an animal in the undergrowth. Just the inhalation of the pure air and smelling the scents of the rainforest will calm your soul.  Visiting here will take your breath away with its beauty (but there’s plenty of clean, invigorating air to breathe back in with!).

What Wildlife Will I See At: Mossman Gorge, Daintree Rainforest, Cassowary Waterfalls?

The rich diversity of the flora and fauna and wildlife is stunning.  The Wet Tropics is home to 135 dung beetle species, 230 butterfly species, 33 types of land snails and at least 663 species of vertebrae.

Over 12,000 types of insect make their homes in Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation with over 3000 species of plants, 395 of which are listed as threatened.

Botanists in Cape Tribulation have even re-discovered the elusive “Idiot Fruit”, which was thought to be extinct and was found again in  1971.

You could chance upon one of the amazing Cassowaries, all 6ft of bird and with a face that is far removed from Tweety Pie’s, as they pick their way through the forest floor.

Looking like punk rockers with Mohican style crests on their head, these magnificent birds are verging on extinction (only 1200 remaining).  Discover from your tour the vital role they play in the life cycle of the Daintree Rainforest.

The Daintree Rainforest is also home to one of the biggest tropical trees in the world, the Bull Kauri, an endangered tree that is now only found in Far North Queensland.

Its height of 50m (160ft) with a trunk diameter of 2.7m (8ft 10 in) will give you a crick in your neck as you strain to see the top tendrilled branches amongst the rainforest canopy.

Play hide-n-seek in the gigantic 10m high buttress roots of a rainforest tree and find out why one plant is called “wait a while”. (your personal tour guide will tell you to definitely not touch this plant)

Out of the corner of your eye you might spot the iridescent flash of blue of a passing Ulysses Butterfly, that are commonly seen flitting amongst the palm fronds of the Daintree Forest and keep an eye up in the trees for the Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo.

This rainforest day tour is a bird watchers or twitchers dream with so many possibilities of capturing some of the most shy and rare birds on the planet in this patch of rainforest.

Families will love it.  Children will never believe they’ve learnt so much and had so much fun in one day!

Points Of Interest On This One Day Mossman Gorge, Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation Visit?

Below are the iconic locations that your Port Douglas day tour will visit. With so many things to see and do, the stops have been designed to show the very best that the area has to show you.

Mossman Gorge Centre – Daintree Rainforest

Understand how the first Aboriginal settlers in Australia, 50,000 years ago, lived in harmony with nature and the rainforest.

Welcome to Kuku Yalanji Country – the local Aboriginal tribe that is indigenous to the Daintree Rainforest area.

Mossman Gorge Centre is the cultural information gathering point of the Daintree Rainforest.

Feast your eyes on the wonderful modern artworks by local artists, from mixed media to oil and prints to etchings and photography.

On visiting the Daintree Rainforest nearby you will feel the rush of the Mossman Gorge River as it cascades over gigantic boulders under your viewing platform and swirling in scenic watering holes all surrounded by the lush rainforest.

You will walk along specially constructed aerial walkways, to minimise the impact of human interference on the rainforest floor. Walking above the forest floor also gives you much better visibility to see the beauty of the rainforest around you.  You will also walk over the Rex Creek Suspension Bridge.

A suspension bridge that isn’t quite wooden slats and vines, but will sway like one when you walk over, built in 2010, it give a great aerial view of the river about 30m below (90ft).

Daintree River Cruise In The Daintree Rainforest

Heading from Mossman Gorge relax in your comfortable seat of the Mercedes Vito Van and soak up the local sights.

As you pass through the local township of Mossman, view a glimpse of passing local life, whizz past the acres of waving cane fields to arrive at the mighty Daintree River where you will start on your river cruise to spot wildlife with your guide.

With the gentle lapping of water on the boat hull you will gently cruise the Daintree River, weaving in and out of tributaries framed with the luscious green leaves of Mangrove branches and drooping rare orchids.

Your tour guide will point out interesting things for you to see and learn about along the way and bring the River to life.

Get up and close with local Estuarine Crocodiles (but don’t worry, not too close!). The vision of a mighty Crocodile languidly lazing on a bank like a discarded piece of expensive luggage is a sight to behold and a great photo opportunity!

You might even see a snake laying on dangling branch (don’t worry snake phobia people they aren’t dangerous), or a well camouflaged tree frog.

For bird lovers you can see Herons of all types – White-faced, Great- Billed and Striated.  The Great Egret a cousin of the Herons can be seen watching and waiting eyeing its prey.

Black- necked storks, known locally as Jabirus use their powerful bill to hunt with and are regular visitors to the River.  Circling above are Ospreys and Kites.

Other birds with fanciful names to be seen are Butcherbirds, Gerygones, Scrubflows and Frogmouths (not the best of compliments!). Cape Tribulation and the Daintree are the mecca for bird watchers and twitchers from the world over.

Luxury Cape Tribulation Tour

After the Daintree River Cruise you will arrive at Cape Tribulation.

You have now made it to the only destination in the world where two World Heritage sites, the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation and The Great Barrier Reef exist side by side.

What a double whammy of complete beauty and nature to make this amazing Tropical Paradise.  If that isn’t enough, the area also boasts yet another world title of being the only place in the world where the Rainforest meets the Reef…. And here you are, experiencing it!

Cape Tribulation Beach Tour

Imagine what it feels like to be Robinson Crusoe and wander along the white deserted sands of Cape Tribulation Beach.

This pristine beach stretches as far as your eye can see, fringed by statuesque coconut trees, out on the horizon you can see the raised hump of uninhabited Snapper Island .  Truly a tropical paradise.

You might even meet a resident Cassowary that has gained notoriety on You Tube videos as it patrols its ‘patch’ along the sandy beach.

Cape Tribulation Beach is a text book example of natural beach vegetation (called ‘littoral’ rainforest).

This rainforest actually protects the beach from the effect of storm surges and acts as a natural shock absorber.

Though it won’t be able to absorb the shocked reaction of visitors gaping at the beauty of the scenery!

Secret Daintree Rainforest Hideaway

In a very secret beautiful place you will eat lunch.  The site is surrounded by the rainforest and the gurgling of rainforest streams.

Hearing the sounds of the forest whilst eating a sumptuous lunch and laughing and chatting with your new friends makes this stop such fun.

After lunch you will have a chance to have a guided walk in the rainforest to gain an insight into this amazing natural habitat.

It’s an interesting fact that one of the best-selling relaxation CD’s people buy is actually the sounds of the Daintree Rainforest.

So just stop and listen, and you too can be transported to feeling at one with nature in complete relaxation.

Daintree Tours - Tropical Ice Cream

How about hitting your taste buds with the whacky yet delicious flavours of Tropical Ice Cream? Forget Ben and Jerry’s, this is locally grown, hand-made in the Daintree Rainforest.

Feast on macadamia, black sapote, passionfruit and wattleseed or whatever fruits are in season at the time. You’ve never tasted anything quite like it… or will again!

Daintree Tours - Cassowary Waterfalls

For an added piece of adventure you will be taken in an ex-army trooper Land Rover over the terrain to the creek where the beautiful inviting Cassowary waterfalls swimming hole and waterfall are.

If you want to feel what it’s like to be on the set of a shampoo commercial or in a paradise setting of a movie set this is it (it has featured in many TV shows).

With the cascading white water of the waterfall hitting the crystal clear water of this secret spot you’ll be here in your own tropical paradise.

Just delicious as you feel the cool, fresh waters of this iconic natural swimming pool envelop you and transport you to another simpler place and time.

For those preferring a more active , less meditative activity, why not attract the local wildlife.

You will have a chance here to also feed the fish and the turtles that inhabit these pristine waters.
