Kuranda Train - Scenic Railway

This is most likely one of the most unique rail journeys in Australia and just recently voted as one of the best train journeys of the world winds its way from Cairns to Kuranda, the “village in the rainforest”.

Rising from sea level to 328m (1076ft) gaze out of the window and look upon cascading waterfalls and the stunning Barron Gorge.

Your Kuranda Scenic Railway journey will include commentary (in English) on the scenery as you are passing and on the history of this amazing railway.

This is your introduction to this amazing World Heritage Rainforest world that boats 1200 different species of flowering plants 800 rainforest trees, strangler figs, prehistoric palms and hundreds of unique creatures that only inhabit this pristine corner of the world in this oldest rainforest in the world.

Kuranda Village – ‘The Village in the Rainforest’

Kuranda Village is known locally or ‘the Village in the Rainforest’ has been a tourist destination for over a century.

Initially people came to admire the Barron Falls, but gradually due to the beauty of the place it became a place where artists and artisans chose to live and now have created a vibrant arts and craft culture here and its here you can cuddle a koala in the koala grdens for a photo.

Today Kuranda is a place to come to not only cool off from the steamy heat of the lowland tropics, but to enjoy seeing creative artworks and unique souvenirs and gifts in the market.

You will have a bit of time to wander around before meeting up to be taken to the Kuranda Rainforestation Nature Park.

Kuranda Rainforestation Nature Park

The Kuranda Rainforestation Nature Park is set on 100 acres of World Heritage Rainforest and offers amazing experiences for your day:

  • Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience

With the local Indigenous tribes dating back 50,000 years the Aboriginal culture in this region is one of the oldest surviving cultures in the world.

In this experience you will be invited by the local Indigenous Pamagirri Guides to join them on a journey of discovery to learn about their ancient traditions and customs that are still alive in the rainforest in Kuranda.

This cultural experience takes about 1 hour and also includes the amazing Pamagirri Aboriginal Dance Show.

You will also be taken on a Dreamtime Walk, where you can learn more about their amazing culture and how their ancient beliefs still interweave with their culture today.

  • Army Duck Rainforest Tour

No, this doesn’t involve ducks of the quacking type, but does involve an amphibious World War II Army vehicle called the Duck.

Each one holds up to 30 passengers and with 6 wheel drive, a rudder and propeller can take you anywhere on and off the land.

Your Duck tour will take 45 unforgettable minutes as your tour guide and Duck Captain will point out the flora and fauna as you immerse yourself in the jungle.

Your tour guide will point out prehistoric ferns, exotic orchids and dangling strangler figs, also the stinging trees (and why you should avoid them).

After going overland into the rainforest you will then launch into the water to continue your tour down the river where you might see turtles, eels and fish near the water’s edge or a lazy python sunbathing.

Amazingly, the rainforest has more species of moths and beetles than all the life forms that live on the Great Barrier Reef.

Here in the rainforest even today, they are still discovering new species on an almost daily basis.

This really is a unique army duck tour and a lot of fun for all of the family.

  • Koala And Wildlife

A series of elevated boardwalks will provide you with close, uninterrupted views of the huge range of indigenous Australian animals here.

These are a collection of native animals that exist in the area and include wallabies, wombats, turtles, snakes, lizards, frogs, quolls and the rare Cassowary

This is your chance to get up close and actually feel, touch and smell a living koala! Get your photos taken standing beside a cuddly koala (extra option)

Handfeed the kangaroos and wallabies and you will have made some new friends very quickly.

Then on to the rather snappy exhibits – some locals refer to them as “snappy handbags” – the crocodiles.

As a safety precaution their mouths are taped shut.  You might think that this might be insufficient for these giant jaws, but despite having the strongest jaws in the animal kingdom of (3000 psi on downward pressure) they have little strength for upward pressure.

Have your photo taken cuddling with a crocodile as a momento!(extra option)

The star of this Kuranda Wildlife Park is “Jack the Ripper”.

Coming in at 5 metres in length and weighing a whopping 650 kgs, this is an animal you wouldn’t want to come across on a dark night, especially since he gained his name from a reputation of having eaten his last 12 girlfriends.

  • Skyrail Cableway – Gondola Ride Cableway

You will then be taken on to the award winning Skyrail gondola experience.

This is a gondola cableway that spans 7.5kms over pristine rainforest and is the world’s first in environmental tourism as it stretches over the listed Tropical Rainforest canopy and deep into the forest.

You will glide just metres above the canopy of the rainforest and your view will be like you are soaring like a bird above this pristine tropical rainforest.

Your journey will immerse you in an intimate rainforest experience where you’ll, hear, smell and be amazed by the beauty of the landscape you are traversing.

From your Skyrail cable car you can see the glittering waters in the distance of the Coral Sea.

It’s no wonder that Skyrail has won so many awards for a journey of such beauty and splendour.

There are a couple of viewing stations that you can get out at along the way to take in the stunning scenery:

Barron Falls Station

An easy access walkway leads you through to a viewing gallery with the most amazing views of the Barron Falls. If it is the Green Season, Dec-March then the view of this waterfall is just spectacular as the rains from the rainforest’s overflowing creeks and riverlets merge in an explosion of water gushing from the mouth of the falls.

Red Peak Station

This station is 545 m (1788 ft) above sea level and is set amongst the pristine forest with a 175 (574 ft)metre boardwalk so you can explore the rainforest at ground level.

Day 2 - Full Day Green Island

For your Green Island Tour you will need to be at the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal for 8.30am as the catamaran leaves at 9.00am.

The reef cruise boat to Green Island from Cairns takes 200 people and is 35m (114 ft) long so there is plenty of room to spread out.

Your boat reef trip will take about an hour from Cairns to Green Island.

You will have the opportunity of having morning coffee or tea when you arrive.

You’ll take a tour boat from Cairns to snorkel on the iconic Great Barrier Reef from Green Island in Queensland Australia.

This idyllic coral cay is surrounded by beautiful coral gardens that are just teeming with colourful fish, giant clams, turtles and other amazing marine life.

Snorkel Tour - Green Island, Cairns Queensland Australia

Green Island lies very close to the mainland at only 27km (16 miles) from Cairns.  The reef that surrounds Green Island supports a diverse range of marine life and habitats.

There are two distinct habitats – the sea grass beds that are seen in the shallows (favourite food for turtles and dugongs) and the reef that stretches out from the shallows to the depths.

The reef around Green Island boasts over 190 various types of hard corals and over 100 soft corals.

With a circumference of just 1.6km it’s amazing what is crammed on to this small island. It has a boardwalk around it’s easy to have a leisurely walk around it.

The island has over 120 species of plants that include a mixture of coastal and rainforest plants.

Out of the 300 coral cays on the Great Barrier Reef, it’s amazing that Green Island is the only one that actually has a rainforest.

The coconut trees you see were introduced in 1889 as sustenance for stranded sailors.

Apart from fauna and flora on the ground there is also amazing diversity in the air.

Over 55 species of birds are listed as being seen regularly on the island.

Of these 13 are seabirds, 38 are land and shore birds and about 15 types of birds are noted to nest on the island.

In-Water Activities – Green Island

You have the choice to partake in a host of water activities whilst on your visit - ride in a semi-submersible submarine (included in tour) PLUS choose between the snnorkel equipment OR glass bottom boat tour.

Extra activities can be booked at extra cost if you wish to immerse yourself more in an underwater experience.

You can book on an introduction to scuba diving course (anyone over 12 can do this subject to medical conditions) or walk underwater wearing a viewing helmet.

All instructions for the snorkelling, scuba diving and helmet walking will be given to you by experienced instructors on the journey out to the island.

Whatever activity you take part in you will get to see the underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland Australia! Since 70% of our world is underwater then this really is our world.

Be amazed at the bright colours of the butterfly and angel fish, like swimming paint palates, giant clams, some as old as 60 and amazing coral formations that look like a mad set designer’s dream on a sci-fi film set.

You might very well see a passing turtle that is cruising in the shallows around the sea grass beds and having a graze.

Whatever you see, the amazing site of viewing the marine world underwater is a sight to behold.

Lunch

If you have built up an appetite after all your activities in the morning then a buffet lunch is served on board the catamaran in air conditioned comfort with salads, cold meat platters and hot dishes.

Marineland Melanesia – Green Island Australia

If you would like to visit this family owned marine museum that was first established in 1954 to see a world breaking crocodile, primitive tribal art form the Melanesian Region, beautiful reef aquariums and marine turtles then have a look around this amazing museum (extra cost).

The star of the show is Cassius, he is a 5.48 m (18ft) saltwater crocodile and has counted Marineland as his home for the last 30 years and joins the other 50 crocodiles that you can see.

Cassius was recognised as a world beater when he joined the Guinness Book of World Records in 2012 as the largest croc in captivity and the oldest at an impressive 112 years old.

You have the whole day to explore the amazing sights – or of course, just laze on the white sand and relax or saunter around the resort shops – the day is yours to do what you would like.

The Green Island boat will return you back to the Reef Fleet Terminal in Cairns at around 5.00pm, happy and over brimming with life at the amazing day you have just had.
