Day 1
We collect you from your Cairns hotel accommodation and head north along the Great Barrier Reef Drive towards Port Douglas and the World Heritage Daintree Rainforest. Along the way your personal tour guide will point out all the places of interest on our public speaking system.
For our first stop, we partake in a light morning tea (tea, coffee & biscuits) and a little look around, and to stretch our legs. Then it’s time to jump on board a boat for a wildlife spotting cruise down the mighty Daintree River where our river guide will point out the interesting and shy animals that inhabit this region.
This is also where you will see the famous crocodiles like the dominant river crocodile called Scar Face whose name is enough to scare you even before you see this brute up close and personal. Make sure you keep all limbs inside the boat at all times.
From here we head back to our four wheel drive and head on over to the Daintree River barge which will have us heading up north into the World Heritage Daintree Rainforest over the Alexander Range where we will be stopping at a place for a panoramic view of this wonderful wild country.
Your personal rainforest naturalist guide will take you to walk along the elevated boardwalks thru the rainforest whilst talking about the history of the region, it’s native wildlife and about the Aboriginal people that have been living here for over 40,000 years.
When in the rainforest it is best to move about as quiet as possible to enable you to see some of the amazing exotic animals that inhabit this place. Ask your tour guide all about the huge rainforest bird called the Cassowary, what they tell you will really rock your world and give you a whole lot of respect for this industrious and highly endangered rainforest animal.
Next stop is for lunch at Daintree Heritage Lodge, Specific dietary requirements can be catered for with advance notice. The set menu offers a choice of grilled fish, grilled steak, chicken wrap, vegan wrap or vegetarian pasta.
Next it’s onto the Cape Tribulation Beach where we take a stroll along the beach and head up the boardwalk to the photographers platform where you will get a great view of where Australia’s World Heritage Rainforest meets the World Heritage Great Barrier Reef.
As we are leaving the Daintree Rainforest and heading south back to Cairns we call into the Daintree Ice Cream Company to try out some local exotic ice creams.
After crossing the Daintree River by barge once again we should have you back in Cairns by 6.00pm or so.
Chillagoe Caves and Outback Queensland
It’s another early morning pick up beginning at 6.45am from Cairns so we may head up the McAllister Ranges towards Dimbulah which will be our morning tea stop. Along the way our outback guide will be spotting wildlife and pointing out places of interest and telling you stories about the region as it goes by.
As we reach our destination you will see towering limestone karsts scattered around the Chillagoe Township. We delve into the history of the Chillagoe copper smelters whose chimneys dominate the arid horizon and we visit the remains of the once mighty industrious smelters that had workers flocking here all those years ago.
Now we head off for a nice pub style lunch in an outback Australian pub where you can get a great cold beer off the icy taps and have a good yarn with the bar tenders.
We take a tour around Chillagoe and then head off to the National Park to take our guided Chillagoe Cave tour the highlight of our day. Literally millions of years in the making these limestone cave formations are nothing less than spectacular. Our caving guide explains how these caves are fossilized remains of the ancient coral reef from some 400-420 million years ago which means the Great Barrier Reef was once this far inland across Australia!
We also have time to visit the Aboriginal Rock Art and the Balancing rock and if time permits we can do a wee bit of shopping in the local gift shop for souvenirs.
We then head back towards Cairns stopping at Dimbulah for a tropical fruit tasting platter and rest stop before heading to Granite gorge to meet some of the local wildlife who are normally there ot greet us if we have any food morsals to share.
We should have you back in Cairns around 6.30pmin time for sundowner drinks and a shower before heading out for dinner.
