We the Mandingalbay Yidinji people are the Traditional Owners of both land and sea Country and have been living on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef amongst the Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest for thousands of years, please join us to learn about our Aboriginal culture.

We have been recognised as the Traditional Owners and custodians of this land by Native Title since 2006.

Our Aboriginal Cultural tours and events provide visitors to Cairns and Tropical North Queensland with the chance to experience ancient lands through ancient hands.

Mandingalbay Yidinji Guides cover topics of cultural significance, and lead interpretative walks, showcasing traditional use of natural resources used for medicinal purposes and sustenance. 

What to Expect

Welcome to Mandingalbay Yidinji Country

  • Begin your journey at the Cairns Marina, where you will board a riverboat for a three-hour cultural exploration. This tour takes you across the tranquil waters of Trinity Inlet to the homeland of the Mandingalbay Yidinji people. As you glide past yachts and wetlands, you will be transported into the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef region, surrounded by lush rainforest-clad mountains.

Arrival and Welcome

  • Upon arrival, you will be greeted with a traditional Welcome to Country and a Smoking Ceremony, marking your official entry into Mandingalbay Yidinji land. This ancient ritual is meant to cleanse and protect you as you embark on your cultural journey.

Guided Aboriginal Cultural Walk

  • After a brief bus ride, you will begin the Mayi Bugan Rainforest Trail Walk, led by knowledgeable Indigenous guides. Here, you will delve into the rich traditions and practices of the Mandingalbay Yidinji people. Learn about the traditional uses of natural resources for medicinal purposes and sustenance and discover native foods and bush medicines. Your guides will share insights into ancient Aboriginal customs, traditions, and artefacts, providing a deep understanding of their cultural heritage.

  • Midway through your journey, enjoy light refreshments surrounded by the serene sounds of nature. This break offers a moment to reflect on the cultural knowledge you've gained and the beauty of the landscape.   • Wet Season: Between December and April, be prepared for wet weather. You may wish to pack light umbrella, poncho, waterproofs, closed in hiking shoes for grip on wet rocks and surfaces.

  • Child rate applies to children 5 to 15 years old. Infants 0 to 4 years old travel free of charge.
