Cairns learn to scuba dive 5 day PADI “Open Water” dive course our most popular option for you to become a scuba diver. Stay on the reef for three days and two nights and the five extra recreational dives makes this course unmatched for experience and value.

Cairns Learn to Scuba Dive 5 Day PADI Dive School 

Try some night diving with head lamps! Join us in the months of June to September and you may just see some amazing whale action as these mammoth creatures head north to the Tropics to calve and mate.

In November and December you can also witness the coral spawning season where it looks like snow is being shot out from the ends of the corals gardens into the water towards the shining full moon above.

Coral spawning means its a huge buffet time for the marine life and they come from many oceans away just for this coral spawning event.

This dive course option consists of two days of theory and pool training then a "three day, two night, nine dives, liveaboard dive trip". Dive courses begin every day, except Sunday, and include the PADI Open Water manual, Dive insurance, dive log book, passport photos, dive equipment, meals and linen, accommodation transfers, and a marine biology presentation.

If you are thinking about taking the plunge and learning to dive, the 5 day PADI ‘Open Water’ dive course is the most popular option. Your course includes 2 days of land-based theory and private in pool training, then 3 days and 2 nights at the Great Barrier Reef staying onboard our fleet of liveaboard dive vessels.

With a total of 4 training and 5 certified dives, including 1 night dive, this course is totally unmatched for experience and greatest value for money and safety.

Cairns PADI Learn to Dive Days 1 - 2

Here it’s back to school where you learn the basics of scuba diving, both classroom and pool, at our purpose built modern, diver training centre in the middle of Cairns City. You learn all about regulating your breathing, how much air is in the tanks and how long you can scuba for.

Things to do and not to do! How to help out your dive buddies, how to look after your gear and all the safety aspects of diving. At the end of day 2 your course includes the option of attending Reef Teach, a two hour marine biology presentation (minimal additional cost.) This informative presentation shows you a taste of what you will experience out on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Please note pick up times will vary so please check your pick-up time with our office. Please bring your dive medical if you require one, cash for lunch, swimwear and towel.

Cairns PADI Learn to Dive Days 3 - 5

With an early departure on day 3 and a sumptuous yummy breakfast served onboard, you are finally on your way to the Great Barrier Reef.

‘Awesome’ the excitement and trepidation are all rolled into one as you cruise of into the sunrise. When you finally get to the outer reef the fun begins and you have the opportunity to do 9 dives in total over the next few days.

Your first 4 training dives see you completing your PADI certification then 5 additional recreational dives to enjoy your new skills and gain some experience. One of these dives is a guided night dive! Now this will play some mind games for you!

Our fleet of liveaboard dive boats have access to 16 exclusive sites on 4 different reefs from Cairns. These sites have been selected for their variety and quality of both coral and marine life as well as great visibility.

Weather permitting, you will rarely dive the same site more than twice. Water temperatures range from 22-29 Celsius (75-85 Farenheit) making for year round comfort.

On the last evening, when you return to Cairns, you have the opportunity to join the crew and your fellow passengers for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. This night is a celebration of your newly found passion — diving!

Our fleet of modern dive vessels with expansive dive and sun decks, and air-conditioned interiors, ensure your comfort for the duration of the trip. With only 32 passengers onboard, all in twin or double accommodation, you are assured of a personalised and memorable adventure!

16:30 De-briefing with instructor and an opportunity to snorkel.
18:00 Dinner - the menu changes each trip however it will be wholesome, hot and of course plentiful!
Then time to relax.

07:00 Third training dive.
09:00 Enjoy a hearty breakfast of cereal, fresh fruit, bacon and eggs as well as toast & spreads.
11:15 Fourth and final training dive for learn to dive students!
12:45 Lunch on the second day is hot pasta with a variety of fresh salads.
15:15 Students first pleasure dive as certified divers!
17:45 A hot dinner is served.
19:30 Experience a guided night dive!

07:30 A hot breakfast accompanied with fresh fruit salad, cereals and toast.
09:00 After breakfast the vessel moves to its last site of the trip, for the second dive of the day.
11:00 Last dive of the trip.
12:00 Lunch is served before the vessel heads back to Cairns – enjoy a selection of freshly made sandwiches.
16:00 Complimentary transfers return you to your accommodation within the – Cairns City & Northern Beaches area.
19:30 You are invited to join fellow customers & crew at a local restaurant for a farewell dinner should
you wish to do so.


Hire An Underwater Camera

If you’re going to the reef we highly recommend hiring an underwater camera so you can capture all the amazing things you see in high quality photos or videos.

With lots of colourful fish, turtles, hard and soft corals, sharks and more on the reef, there is so much to take photos of! Get a selfie with friendly fish or maybe capture the next award winning National Geographic image! SUWC have a range of cameras to suit your budget and needs.

Every camera rental comes with a FREE SD card for you to take home. Cameras can also be delivered direct to your accommodation to make things as easy as possible for you! 

Course Requirements

  • Ability to swim - 200m (or 300m with mask, fins and snorkel) and tread water (float) for 10 minutes.
  • Minimum age 10 years (no maximum age).
  • Some medical conditions may prevent you from diving. You will be required to obtain a dive medical certificate if you answer “yes” to any of the questions on the entry level student diver medical declaration. If you do require a dive medical, it must be obtained prior to commencing the course and must not be more than 90 days old when you start with us.

If you don't know your pick up place prior to your course commencement you will need to make your own way to our training centre located at 116 Spence Street, Cairns for an 08:30am start

Scuba Diving Restrictions

  • Certain medical conditions and medications may preclude some people from scuba diving.
  • Participation is subject to a medical questionnaire completed on board with the tour operator
  • Minimum age for scuba diving is 12 years.
  • Flying after scuba diving: a wait of 12 hours is recommended after one dive, 18 hour after 2 dives and at least 24 hours after multiple dives, before ascending to an altitude of 300 metres or greater.

1. Cancellations received 48 hours prior to travel will be charged 100%.
2. No Shows: Will be charged 100%.
Please note: Any participant who commences the 5 Day Learn to Dive Course may cancel for any reason up until the end of Day 1. Customers who have purchased their course through a travel agent are advised that agent cancellation fees may
apply and to contact their Agent in this regards. No refunds are applicable for any reason after this time.

You can cancel your Learn to Dive course for any reason at any time up to the end of Day 1 of the course and receive a full refund of all money paid. There is no refund for any reason after this time.
