Unique Under Water Activities Great Barrier Reef

Sophie Tabouel on June 27th, 2023

Swimming, snorkelling and scuba are pretty synonymous with a visit to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. Beyond these usual ways to experience the underwater world, there are some rather unique experiences to be found on your visit to the tropics…

Walk on the sea floor…

Ready to level up from the usual snorkel experience but not quite ready to dive? Seawalker Green Island is an opportunity for you to do just this. Sea Walker Helmet Diving is a great way to experience the sights of the Great Barrier Reef.

Squeeze into your wetsuit and helmet and descend the ladder to a depth of around 5 meters below the surface. Walk the sea floor surrounded by friendly fish and with an on site photographer on hand to capture the best moments. Even beginner swimmers can enjoy this exciting experience!

Next step is Scuba Doo...

Scuba Doo is another a unique way to view the Great Barrier Reef. A must do addition to your day at the Outer Reef platform, there are only limited departures each day so pre-booking is essential.

Travel underwater in control of your very own motorised scooter complete with a special breathing helmet. Cruising at depths of 4 meters, this is a great option for visitors who are not strong swimmers but who are brave enough to head below the surface.

Enjoy 20 minutes of exploring the coral formations and marine life found only at the Outer Reef.

Semi-submersible Boat Tours

The easiest way for non-swimmers and families with younger children to see the coral and creatures of the Great Barrier Reef.

Available on all Outer Reef Platforms and at Green Island, board this unusual boat for 30 minutes of underwater exploration.

Seated in air-conditioned comfort, the bottom of this vessel is surrounded by glass windows which allow you to get a greater view of the passing coral formations, reef fish and perhaps even a sea turtle.

The skipper is up top to ensure that you receive a brief commentary of the sights you are seeing below.

There are so many activities to do on the Great Barrier Reef other than snorkeliling and scuba diving making it the perfect destination for all ages.
