Cairns Wildlife Safaris Reserve – Dine on the Edge

Posted on November 18, 2009 by

I had the opportunity to experience one of the best night experience from Cairns. I went to dine with the lions at the Cairns Wildlife Safari.  Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve is located on the Kennedy Highway, a scenic 35 minute drive west from Cairns, just 10 km past Kuranda.
Erick, Blythe and myself were the lucky ones to share this experience. Erick kindly offered us to be the driver for the night so we could enjoy a smooth and relaxing ride through the Kuranda range and the tropical rainforest.
Upon arrival (6pm) we were welcomed by our guide and refreshment drink (Beer, wine or soft drink… A good start for the night!). Then we were taken to the hippo enclosure. To watch these massive animals feeding on lettuce was very funny. They looked so peaceful but having spent 15 years in Africa myself I know how these animals can be dangerous!
On our way to the dinning area we stopped and had a look at the macaque enclosure. The dinning area is set within the lions enclosure. As soon as we got there we were surrounded by them, they were as curious about us as we were about them! These kings of the reserve were followed by their female counterparts who put on a show feeding on carcasses and bones (So impressive and majestuous). Maybe it was to open our appetite for dinner?
Dinner was excellent: Steak, fish, chicken as well as salads. The bar was also open for drinks.
After dinner our friendly and knowledgeable guide took us for a walk at night around the park to visit the quarantine area and to see the bears, monkeys, cheetahs and the white rhino. It was very interesting to learn about these animals diets and behaviors.
Then back to the dinning area for dessert (Chocolate cake or fruit salads) and coffee or tea.
In this park you will find lions, tigers, cheetahs, servals, bears, hippos, otters, dingoes, macaques, lemurs,
monkeys, ostriches, gibbons, alpacas.
The park opens daily 9am – 4.30pm.
You can choose to drive there or to get a transfer from Cairns. You can also combine a visit of the park wit a Kuranda experience (Train and Skyrail).
Breakfast with the Beasts (7.30am – 11am) is also available.
You can experience Dine with the Lion Wednesday, Friday & Saturday nights.
It was a wonderful experience and I will recommend it to everybody interested in wildlife!  Thank you for such a good time.
