Ballooning with Raging Thunder
Posted on November 13, 2009 by admin
3.30am I rose to the lovely sound of my alarm for a 4.20am pick up for my gorgeous morning flight on a hot air balloon. As I got comfy on a very warm bus it was time to sit back, relax and enjoy the one hour drive over the Kuranda range to Mareeba as it is still very dark it is a good idea to rest as at this hour it is normal to still be in bed.
On arrival at the Mareeba Heritage Centre it’s time for a quick bathroom stop then we head out to the balloon lunching launch site. The pilots way of determining the exact launch location is to launch a helium balloon and see which way the wind is blowing. Once the location is sorted the inflation begins.
I was on the 1st flight & it was still dark when we climbed into the basket. There were about 6 crew holding our basket down just before we were about to take off a safety briefing is given before take off and a quick photo of the group is taken and before you know your up up & away. Heading up to around 8,000ft the views are breathtaking it is so peaceful. About 20 minutes into my flight the sun rose it was spectacular. After taking numerous photos and taking in the magnificent scenery over the Tablelands & Mareeba it was time for our decent. When the pilot tells you to get in your landing positions you know you are about to land. The landing was very smooth but we landed in a paddock full of cows which was very interesting they didn’t even budge surprisingly they just kept eating their grass.
One at a time we hopped out of the basket as one person climbed in. You then hop onto an extended trailer and head back to the bus. Its great to see the 2nd flight take off it lifts with such ease.
Right now it’s time for balloon chasing the pilots keep in radio contact with the bus drivers so they can meet up at the landing location. After 30 minutes of chasing the 2nd flight lands and its time to pack the balloon up this is so much fun to be a part of it takes around 30 minutes to complete. After the balloon is packed up its off to the Mareeba Heritage Centre for breakfast which at this time you are really looking forward to. You can expect the works hot & cold buffet. To top breakfast off is a glass of bubbly & receiving your flight certificate. After you have finished breakfast you have free time to look around the historic museum, it is fantastic and really takes you back in time.
With having spent an hour at the Centre its time to head back home. The drive home is scenic with so much to see as you drive down the roads of the Mareeba Valley.
This tour is so amazing & breathtaking. I would recommend this to everyone.
Thank you to the crew at Raging Thunder who made for a most memorable Morning.
