Underwater Scooter Riding on the Great Barrier Reef

Posted on July 9, 2018 by

Scuba Doo is one amazing Great Barrier Reef experience that can be enjoyed by everyone and a perfect way for non-swimmers to explore the depths of the coral reef.

There is no experience required for this activity at all, you will just need to pass a Medical Questionnaire.

This should make it all the more attractive to people who are nervous about breathing through a snorkel or a scuba diving regulator.

Here, you don’t have to worry about the breathing as there is free-flowing air thru the helmet to the surface.

And, unlike other underwater helmet diving activities, the helmet is fixed to the scooter so that you don’t feel any weight on your shoulders.

There is no need to exert energy trying to keep afloat or to propel yourself in the water, because the scooter is fully motorised just like an underwater motorbike.

The helmets completely cover your head so that you can leave contact lenses in, wear glasses, and keep your hair dry if preferred.

It is so Easy!

No mask, no mouthpiece, no heavy weight belt and no swimming experience is required.

Not having to worry about a breathing apparatus is the best part about this Great Barrier Reef experience.

But aside from all of these things, the beauty is in the fact that you have the ability to travel down to an underwater depth of up to 4 metres below the water’s surface.

On Scuba Doo you get to venture further and deeper than if you were just snorkelling so you will see a lot more marine life and the better corals.

Scuba Doo is easy to control, and you are accompanied by a scuba diver guide to keep you safe all the way.

You may have heard of the skills tests required to do Scuba Diving, well there is no need to do any prerequisite skills tests to Scuba Doo.

You just pop your head up in the helmet while straddling the scooter’s seat, sit down and push a button for acceleration on the handlebars.

From there you can steer your way to explore the coral reef below at your pace with your guide.

You can cruise along and enjoy the scenery whilst a guide navigates you around the coral bommies.

These knowledgeable guides know where to find the interesting marine life and you will be introduced to some cheeky regular locals who just love to have selfies taken with them.

My Personal Experience

I couldn’t believe how easy it was, and how close up I was able to get to coral bommies several metres below the surface.

I was able to observe clown fish swimming amongst soft anemone coral not far from in front of me, schools of fish swimming past me, and Wally the resident Maori Wrasse, who hung around quite inquisitively.

He is one spectacular fish! Not just for his size, but the incredible squiggly patterns on him as well.

I was so close to him that I could have reached out and touched him if I was allowed to.

I was able to get some photos with him too.

Scuba Doo is a must do!

I couldn’t believe how easy it was to Scuba Doo, and how close up I was able to get to coral bommies several metres below the surface.

I was able to observe clown fish swimming amongst soft anemone coral not far in front of me, huge schools of fish swimming past me, and play with Wally the famous Maori Wrasse fish, who hung around quite inquisitively waiting for some attention.

He is one big spectacular lovable fish! Not just for his size, but the intricate squiggly patterns on him as well.

I was so close to him that I could have reached out and touched him if I was allowed to.

I was able to get some selfies with him too.

Scuba Doo is a must do!

As I am a keen and confident snorkeller of many years, I must admit, I felt snorkelling was my preferred way of taking in the sights the Great Barrier Reef.

But that was before I tried Scuba Doo!

There are so many benefits to be gained from this underwater activity, I can now see why it is such a popular and addictive activity on the Great Barrier Reef.

And now that I’ve experienced it for myself, I can confidently say that I cannot recommend it enough as an absolute must do!

Not only to non-swimmers for which it is perfect alternative concept for, but also to those who are content with snorkelling but want to see the reef from a different perspective.

It simply is an amazing experience not to be missed!

Take an Underwater Camera With You

Although there were professional photographers taking photos of people participating in activities at the Great Adventures activity pontoon, I took an underwater camera with me to use while snorkelling.

I was surprised that I was able to use it on my under water Scuba Doo scooter experience too.

I took the standard ‘selfie’, but my guide was happy to take my underwater camera to get some photos of me in action on the Scuba Doo Scooter.

I definitely wanted to have a ‘token photo’ to show off my adventures on the underwater scooter on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Scuba Doo Only in Cairns

Great Adventures is the only host for Scuba Doo Underwater Scooters in Australia. So make the most of your time in Cairns, and give Scuba Doo a go. It simply is a MUST DOO life experience.

**Minimum age is 12 years. All participants are required to undergo a brief medical check before participating, so take a look at the Medical Questionnaire to see if you can participate in this underwater adventure.
