Fishing North Queensland
Posted on April 12, 2018 by Sophie Tabouel
It’s not all pool bars and rainforest tours in Far North Queensland.
The rivers, estuaries and of course, the Great Barrier Reef provide a fertile ground for a huge variety of fish and is a must see destination for any keen fisherman.
Of course the famous Barramundi is pretty high on the most wanted list for most Aussie fishermen.
As this fish begins life as a male and then becomes female at later maturity, each year there is a Closed Season coinciding with the spawning to ensure the life cycle of Barramundi is protected.
From November 1 through to February 1 each year the Barramundi are not to be targeted.
However, time and plan your holiday right and you can be in Cairns ready after the rains to wet a line in search of one of these prize fish.
There are a range of fishing adventures to see you on your way to catching the “Barra”. Start with an easy half-day morning Estuary Fishing Tour.
A great value option for first timers, limited timers or families.
Prowl the Trinity Inlet and mangroves in search of Barramundi and more!
From February onwards till October you may also land yourself a Queenfish, School Trevally, Salmon, Flathead, Grunter or Whiting.
To really get those Barra, you may need to get right out of the way. The Outback Helicopter Fishing Tour is the ultimate in Barra chasing adventure.
Board your helicopter and fly west to the mighty Mitchell River. Here, park yourself on the bank next to the heli and get ready to reel in those Barra.
An amazing, once in a lifetime experience.
Barramundi aside, some of our more famous fish include the Black Marlin.
Every year, hundreds of hard core fishermen converge on the Far North for the traditional Marlin season running from September through to early December.
An incredible experience best enjoyed aboard a professional boat with a top class Skipper and crew.
The MV-MOAIII Private Heavy Tackle Fishing Charter is an ideal option to make sure you get those prized fish in comfort and style.
With one day and extended charters available, this 47 foot luxury game fishing boat is the platform to land yourself an incredible Black Marlin.
For a smaller group of anglers, the MV-BF Heavy Tackle Charter is another fantastic option.
This 43 foot HMG Game boat has a top speed of 25 knots – perfect to get you out to the fishing grounds ready to make the most of your day.
If you happen to be one of our lucky visitors, with time to spare or set aside for an extended fishing charter, the Luxury Private Charter Yacht is a must do.
Set yourself and your friends or family up on board in luxury with this superb 70 foot motor yacht as your mother ship.
Set off for an extended 3, 5 or even 7 day adventure to reach those far flung destinations away from the rest of the bottom bashers.
Choose to add one, two or three Centre Console boats to your entourage and get really serious. Princess Charlotte Bay – lookout!
Not everyone wants the famous fish though and that’s ok too.
If you and your friends or family would just like to take the opportunity to hit the reef and catch yourself a tasty Mackerel or Nannygai or maybe a Coral Trout, we can help you out.
The 1 Day Shared Charter departing Port Douglas is a great day out.
The crew will set you up with all bait and tackle and are happy to help out on the day for those who are not so experienced.
From Cairns, the Cairns Reef Fishing crew have two fine and recently refurbished boats ready to hit the reef.
If you’re visiting during our ‘winter’ months over the busy school holiday period, now’s the time to catch some Red Emperor, Spotted Mackerel and Coral Trout.
Make sure you book in advance to avoid missing out over this busy period!
Our skippers and crew will keep a close eye on the conditions so you don’t even need to worry about the weather!
