Surfing… Jungle Style! All Weather Fun For All Ages!
Posted on May 14, 2013 by Colleen
Located in the heart of the Daintree Rainforest at Cape Tribulation, this 200m long eco-friendly zip-line is the ultimate, heart-pumping ride that gets you up close & personal with the flora & fauna of the world’s oldest Rainforest.
Cape Tribulation is located 140kms north of the city of Cairns, approx. a 2.5 hour scenic drive.
I would recommend self-driving. Renting a car can make it a cost-effective way to travel. However, if that is not possible, there are various companies that offer tours and transfers to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest.
The best way to organise is by contacting a tour specialist here; http://www.thetourspecialists.com/contact.html to customise an option that best suits you.
The tour includes pick-ups from the Cape Tribulation Camp Ground, Ferntree Lodge & The Snake House. For those that are self-driving you can meet at the Snake House which is located on the ocean side of the road between PK’s & Cape Tribulation Beach. There are up to 8 tours a day and bookings are essential.
After a short, 3 minute drive, and a few bad jokes by the quirky guide, we arrived at the jungle Tree House Harnessing Centre. They are all about minimal interference with the Rainforest, so they have built an eco-friendly shack to house all their equipment that is run completely on solar power. The crew will fit you out with a full body harness & give you a helmet with a nick-name, I was Alice in Wonderland, quite fitting I thought considering the fantasy-like adventure I was about to endure. Keeping in mind you can take a camera with you, the crew will clip it safely to your harness so you can get some fantastic shots!
Once everyone is geared-up, one of the guides will take you on a walk through the beautiful rainforest to the first platform (be prepared for more bad jokes! My stomach was sore from laughing by the time the tour was finished!). During the walk you will see a plethora of ancient native plants & trees and if you’re lucky, spot some native critters. Our guide pointed out a Boyd’s Forest Dragon (a lizard that is found only in North Qld).
Arriving at the exit platform, you are given a safety briefing and will be winched up to the first platform which is located 30m away. At all times throughout the tour the guides will be in complete control of your flight. All the platforms are bound around native trees some of which are estimated to be over thousand years old and have 70 times the strength of steel.
Arriving at Platform 1, the 2nd highest part of the tour, the crew will secure your harness to safety lines. Throughout the tour you will always be fastened to a safety line even on the landing platforms so you can rest assure that safety is given number 1 priority. If you are travelling with friends or partners, the crew will ensure you are coupled up with them from the 1st platform so you can share the experience together.
At Platform 2 you are greeted with the most breath taking view where you can see through the canopy to the fringing Great Barrier Reef surrounding the coastal Daintree rainforest. Between platforms 2 & 3 is the longest of each of the lines. The guides will stop you over the picturesque, flowing creek. This is a great photo op, and a chance to look around and absorb the true beauty of Mother Nature.
Between Platform 3 & 4 it was time to speed things up a notch and we made like Tarzan for a solo, fast zip down across the creek to the 4th Platform then on to platform 5, the final platform of the tour. The last flight, you can flip upside down and hang hands-free like a bat! It is a lot of fun!
Looking around during the tour you will see an abundance of life through the rainforest. Birds, butterflies, insects and other native critters up high in the canopy down to the forest floor. It is truly a unique way to experience the beautiful wilderness.
Upon completion of the tour, you will wonder back to the tree house to be de-harnessed. Then it’s back on the bus to return to your pick-up point.
Jungle Surfing is suitable from anyone aged 3-103 and all fitness levels! Great for the whole family! Perfect for those that have limited time in Cape Tribulation, as it is a 2 hour tour from pick up to drop off.
Operating all year round, it’s a great all-weather activity.
Boasting some of the best vantage points of where the rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef, it’s sure to be a crowd pleaser!
