Blazing Saddles Adventures – Half Day And Full Day Tours Packed With Fun And Action
Posted on March 18, 2013 by Colleen
When traveling in a small or large group it is really challenging to find a full day or half day tour or an activity that will satisfy everyone. Feeling a bit adventurous we all decided to book a combo tour of Horse Riding and ATV Quad bikes at ‘Blazing Saddles Adventures’ in Yorkeys Knob just ten minutes north of Cairns. Some of us had a little horse riding experience whilst others were first timers and the same went for the all-terrain vehicles or quad bikes.
After being picked up from our hotel accommodation on the Cairns Northern Beaches and a short drive (10 minutes) we arrived at ‘Blazing Saddles Adventures’ (transfers can also be arranged from Port Douglas, minimum 4 people).
After a warm welcome and briefing, we were offered complimentary refreshments tea and coffee or if you would rather a soft drink, you can purchase one from the vending machine.
At the time of booking we were advised to wear jeans or long pants (not your brand new white denim), enclosed footwear and T-shirt (to avoid sun burns), as I wasn’t planning on doing horse riding or ATV quad biking while holidaying in Cairns I hired a pair of jeans from Blazing Saddles Adventures for a small fee of $4.00 (money well spent if you want to save your brand new white denim).
Guests can choose to either self-drive to the Blazing Saddles property or catch the free coach service. When everyone was assembled we were introduced to our guides and given safety helmets and given a brief chat about the horse riding trails we were about to explore.
We then moved to the arena where each individual was matched to a horse according to his or her age, weight, height and ability. Blazing Saddles Adventures has over 70 Australian Stock Horses so there is always a suitable horse that will match your riding skills. The young children were also introduced to their own personal guides who stayed with them (on foot, leading the horses) and answered all their questions the whole time.
And off we go… through the semi-arid rainforest, around the 18 acre billabong, where you might be lucky and spot a ferocious salt water crocodile, through the sugarcane fields and Australian native bushland. The horse ride in itself was amazing and brought back memories from my childhood. Our tour guides were very knowledgeable and answered pretty much all our questions. For some of us that were a bit more experienced as horse riders we had the opportunity to canter, that’s was a wonderful experience, nothing beats the feeling of the wind on your face!
After that exhilarating ride it was time to swap our horses for the ATV quad bikes. As I have never been quad biking before I was really nervous of getting on and driving this powerful machine but as we were in a group there was no way I was going to chicken out on this one. We were given a dirt bike to match our skills with a choice of a 90cc or 250cc and some quad bike safety instructions. Next, we made our way to a very well designed track to practice and perfect our turns and handling of the bike before tackling the ‘real’ dirt tracks. The quad bike practice track had been well watered making it a mud lover’s dream. We zoomed around the track and gained speed after each lap (I must have done 10 laps, I had so much fun I can’t really remember); at the end of it we were all covered with fresh wet mud (remember ‘not your brand new white denim’). Now we were humming we then ventured through the sugarcane fields and native bush lifting clouds of dust and challenging ourselves on the hills and gullies of the large property.
After having so much fun on the horse ride and the quad bikes we were ready to refuel… Blazing Saddles Adventures had prepared a sumptuous sausage sizzle so we all enjoyed a bite to eat together listening to each other’s exploits. It was then time to head back to our hotel and say goodbye to the amazing Blazing Saddles Adventures team. Their friendliness, professionalism and knowledge of the area make this experience all worthwhile. Personally, I thought I would enjoy the horse ride more than the ATV but they were both equally fun. I cannot recommend Blazing Saddles Adventures day tours enough.
From the bottom of my heart thank you from all of us for a terrific afternoon.
